Phil Heath is a fourth-generation English blacksmith with over 31 years of experience.†He operated a family-owned blacksmithing business in the southwest of England for 20 years before settling in the United States. He is a member of the Blacksmiths Guild of the Potomac, serving as the president, and as shop master for the forge at Gulf Branch Nature Center in Arlington, Va. Come take advantage of this unique experience to learn from a master. Participants will be making a sample grill using several joinery techniques and incorporating a flower design. Class time 9AM-5PM each day.

Class:Intermediate Knife Making 2: Handles & Fittings

In this class students will begin with a completed hidden-tang knife blank (provided as part of class materials) and will fit a finger guard and hidden tang handle to the blade. Students will learn tips and tricks for getting clean, tight-fitting guards and handles on a hidden tang knife and will leave with a completed and functional hidden tang knife.
Class time 9AM-5PM each day.

In this class, students will get a 2 day introduction into the craft and construction of handmade knives. Students will learn the basics of blade forging, grinding, and heat treatment, as well as how to affix a full-tang style handle to their forged blades. At the end of the class will take home a complete knife ready for sharpening. Class time 9AM-5PM each day.

In this extended 4 day version of BS-101, students will learn blacksmithing safety, setting up of their own shop, evaluating equipment, an overview of forge welding, an overview of working with high carbon and tool steels, finishes and blacksmithing resources. Students will learn to make: Forge poker, drip cans, various types of hooks, forge & heat treat a scribe. Wed & Thurs will be open forge for students to try making items which fall within their skill level & time limits. Class time 9AM-5PM each day.

Learn hammer control, hardening and tempering, and rivet making. You will forge a pair of pick up tongs and all the tooling necessary to punch, drift, rivet, and assemble them. Projects will include a top rivet set, bottom rivet stake, center punch, scribe, round punch, and a punch plate or bolster. Class time 9am-5pm each day.

In this class students will delve deeper into what makes a functional and high quality knife blade. There will be in-depth coverage of topics such as blade forging, geometry, heat treatment, and finishing. Upon completion each student will leave with a completed hidden-tang style blade ready to have a handle and guard affixed.
