Class: Get Hooked on Blacksmithing

This one-day introductory course allows the student to try their hand at forging steel into a simple hook. This course introduces basic hammer skills to change the shape and direction of steel from raw bar-stock into a functional and decorative tab hook or S-hook. This one-day course does not qualify as a prerequisite for intermediate and advanced classes but allows the student to see if blacksmithing is a hobby or craft they would like to pursue further. Class time 9am-5pm.

Class:Forging roses and flowers

This class will focus on forming flowers. Students will create different flowers in time for Valentine's Day. This will include the sheet metal rose, rolled rose, and others. Stems and leaves will be forged from bar stock. We will explore textures, tooling, and techniques. All materials are provided. Students should have basic metalworking knowledge, but there are no prerequisite courses. Class time 9am-5pm each day.

Class:Forge Welding and Pattern Welded Steel

Prerequisite: BS101 or similar experience

This class will focus on the fundamentals of forging welding and build to create a twist pattern-welded billet. The students will learn how to prepare themselves, forges & fires for forge welding. The students will learn techniques for the most popular forge welds than apply their learned skills to create a flux spoon with a loop welded handle. We will start by learning the basics of forge welding with bar stock and progress to a simple cable billet, a twist pattern billet, and explore other simple patterns. We will use mild steel, lawn mower blades and bandsaw blades to explore this process. The etching process will also be done to expose the patterns. Leather aprons are highly recommended. Class time 9am-5pm each day.

Students will learn a variety of twists to use for handles; pineapple twist, basket twist, rope twist; as well as a variety of decorative twist to use for decoration. We will incorporate the twists for the handle and decoration of a fireplace tools set. More complex twists can be explored as time and skill level permits. Class time 9am-5pm each day.

In this class, students will get a 2 day introduction into the craft and construction of handmade knives. Students will learn the basics of blade forging, grinding, and heat treatment, as well as how to affix a full-tang style handle to their forged blades. At the end of the class will take home a complete knife ready for sharpening. Class time 9AM-5PM each day.

Class:Intermediate Bladesmithing II: Handles & Fittings

In this class students will begin with a completed hidden-tang knife blank (provided as part of class materials) and will fit a finger guard and hidden tang handle to the blade. Students will learn tips and tricks for getting clean, tight-fitting guards and handles on a hidden tang knife and will leave with a completed and functional hidden tang knife.
Class time 9AM-5PM each day.

In this class students will delve deeper into what makes a functional and high quality knife blade. There will be in-depth coverage of topics such as blade forging, geometry, heat treatment, and finishing. Upon completion each student will leave with a completed hidden-tang style blade ready to have a handle and guard affixed.
