Class:Forging a Rose and Flowers

This class will focus on forming flowers. Students will create different flowers in time for Valentine's Day. This will include the sheet metal rose, rolled rose, and others. Stems and leaves will be forged from bar stock. We will explore textures, tooling, and techniques. All materials are provided. Students should have basic metalworking knowledge, but there are no prerequisite courses. Class time 9am-4pm each day.

Class:Reforging Hammers

UPDATED: This class will focus on taking standard commercial hammers and creating specialty hammers and top tools. Hammers for the class will be provided. Students can bring any additional hammer heads to rework. Turn old ball piens into handled punches, engineer's hammers into dishing hammers, forge flat faces to diagonal piens, convert brick hammers to raising hammers, etc. Hammers with chipped edges may be ground and reforged. The class will cover grinding and dressing hammer faces, reforging new faces, heat treating, and handling hammers and top tools. We will not be punching the eyes from new stock. Instead, these are simple ways to make custom tools from yardsale and tailgate finds without requiring a striker. Students should have basic metalworking knowledge and forging experience, but there are no prerequisite courses. Class time 9am-5pm each day

This class will focus on the fundamentals of forging pattern-welded billets. We will start with forge welding a simple cable billet, a twist pattern billet, and explore other simple patterns. We will use mild steel, lawn mower blades and bandsaw blades to explore this process. The etching process will also be done to expose the patterns. Leather aprons are highly recommended. We will work one on one with the students on the power hammer to draw out the billets once they are welded together. This class is limited to 6 students to allow for using the power hammer. Class time 9am-5pm each day.

In this extended 4 day version of BS-101, students will learn blacksmithing safety, setting up of their own shop, evaluating equipment, an overview of forge welding, an overview of working with high carbon and tool steels, finishes and blacksmithing resources. Students will learn to make: Forge poker, drip cans, various types of hooks, forge & heat treat a scribe. Wed & Thurs will be open forge for students to try making items which fall within their skill level & time limits. Class time 9AM-5PM each day.

Students will learn the basics of blade forging, grinding, and heat treatment, as well as how to affix a full-tang style handle to their forged blades. At the end of the class will take home a complete knife ready for sharpening. Class time 9AM-5PM each day.

Learn to forge your own tongs. We will focus on 5 types of tongs during this class: twist jaw, offset bolt tongs, traditional box jaw, scroll tongs and pick up tongs. We will start with forging tongs from ¼ X ¾ bar stock and work up to traditional tongs with forge welded reins. You will be able to fit these tongs to your specific stock size. Class time 9AM-5PM each day.

Pre-requisite - Basic Knife making
In this 2 day course, students will go beyond the basics and learn more advanced techniques for forging, grinding, and finishing blades. As heat treatment is the most critical process in the making of a quality hand forged blade, this course will also give the students a more detailed understanding of, and more hands-on experience with heat treatment of simple carbon steels. Class time 9am-5pm each day.
